LEISURE: Celebration of VE Day’s 80th Anniversary

0
VE Day holds a profound place in the history of the United Kingdom, marking the cessation of hostilities and the return of peace to a war-torn continent. As a town with strong historical ties to the war effort, Christchurch is bringing the community together in remembrance, celebration, and reflection.

VE Day’s 80th anniversary event will take place on Thursday 8th May at Christchurch Quay, from 6pm to 10pm, as part of the nationwide commemorations honouring the end of World War ll in Europe. Christchurch Quay will be transformed into a vibrant post-war gathering place, mirroring the joyful spirit that marked the original VE day in 1945.

The event will feature live music performances from vintage and military bands, war-time vehicles, family-friendly activities as well as historical displays and exhibitions, providing an opportunity to educate younger generations about the significance of this day. Visitors are encouraged to attend in war-time costumes and Union Jacks with a best dressed competition being held on the night. Other delights include gifts, face painting, fun fair rides and food and drink stalls.

As part of the national commemoration initiative, Christchurch will join councils across the country in observing a series of key moments, including the Town Crier’s Proclamation, the stirring sound of Scots Piper, the lighting of the Beacon at 9:30pm, and the singing of “I Vow to Thee My Country.”

Acting Town clerk, James Atkinson, said:

“We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to the Quay for what promises to be a truly spectacular evening.”

Come along to join the celebration, and feel the sense of shared heritage among the community.
