A Dorset funeral director is welcoming the governments plans to increase regulation of the industry.

This industry regulation is being led by Health Secretary Wes Streeting with the changes proposed following scandals that involving funeral directors corruption.

Nick Douch, managing director of the Douch Family Funeral Directors that runs seven branches across Dorset said: “The majority of funeral directors are honest and provide a professional service.

“People at this time are  vulnerable and more easily taken advantage of and it’s greatly upsetting to see funeral directors do exactly this.”

In Hampshire, two undertakers were jailed for four years following the prevention of a lawful burial, and other crimes.

Nick adds “I welcome any regulations that prevent that from happening – those of us who act professionally need have nothing to fear.”

Nick says he has been working closely with local authorities to help shape what good inspection standards should look like. Nick’s family business has been operating for more than a century.

“Any regulation needs to be practical, consistent and focused on maintaining dignity and proper care for the deceased, while giving families confidence in the services they receive.”
