A new survey just launched is asking Dorset residents for their views on Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology.
Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick has launched a survey ahead of the LFR technology. This will be used in Dorset for the first time this summer.
David Sidwick said “While I support the use of new technology which will help Dorset Police in the detection and apprehension of know offenders, as a key part of my role as Dorset’s PCC is too ensure the use of technology such as LFR is properly and robustly scrutinised.”
The LFR vans can be used not only to detect crime, but also deter and find wanted criminals. Additionally the vans are used to protect people from harm.
The vans will be clearly signposted and the locations will be available for the public to accessed. They will be on the Dorset Police website and social media.
“I want to be very clear with the people of Dorset that this technology will be subject to strict safeguards to ensure fairness, transparency and privacy.”
The software analyses key features which compares the live image against known faces in the database which then generates potential matches.
The final decision as to whether the individual is approached is made by officers. This decision will be made with the assistance of the technology in place to recommend who and why is approached.
The survey is now open and will close on 14th May, you can take part here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LFRsurvey
“Your feedback plays an important role in shaping how Dorset Police continue to serve our communities.”
