NEWS: Local MP supports residents with series of ‘Super Surgeries’

In the Winter edition of BH Living, we published a story entitled ‘The Rental Trap’, which highlighted the plight of many local people facing the prospect of either higher rents or homelessness.

Although central government has released plans to address this problem, including building more homes nationwide, Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale is stepping up efforts to support residents with a series of ‘super surgeries’

She is bringing together partners this month and next for a series of ‘super surgeries’ across the area to support renters, homeowners and rough sleepers. After many conversations with residents with a range of housing issues, from poor quality rentals and extortionate land management fees to families facing homelessness or not able to get on the housing ladder, Jessica has decided to run special surgeries specifically to help local people facing housing issues.

The surgeries, starting mid January, are separate to and on top of the new MP’s regular surgeries, which support residents with a range of issues.

Jessica and her team have partnered with other local agencies for these events, including Citizens Advice, Shelter, Dorset Police, St Mungo’s and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Jessica said : “In recent months, I have been deeply concerned by the growing number of residents raising issues related to housing, ranging from poor-quality accommodation, people in temporary housing, neighbourhood anti-social behaviour, and homelessness. To address these challenges, I will be hosting three ‘housing super surgeries,’ aimed at providing constituents with the opportunity to share their specific concerns and receive advice and guidance from local organisations who specialise in these issues.”

The 2025 housing surgeries taking place are:

  • Friday 17th January at Henry Brown Centre In West Howe
  • Friday 31st January at Bourne Community Hub in Alderney
  • Friday 14th February at Winton Royal British Legion

Anyone looking to attend these sessions should register interest via Jessica’s website, or the MP’s office, where they will be provided with further information about timings and venues.

A bigger ‘town hall’ style event will take place on Saturday 1st March near Cemetery Junction (the exact location of the venue will be release to those who have registered nearer the time, for security reasons) , where constituents can raise broader concerns and learn about the government’s priorities as they relate to Bournemouth West.
