Poole Hospital had over 1000 visitors for their open day on Saturday 14 September, beating their previous record.

Visitor numbers almost doubled compared to the last open day at the hospital in 2015.

The fully booked guided tours allowed people to go behind the scenes of the hospital and see in areas such as x-ray, pathology laboratories, operating theatres, the physiotherapy gymnasium and even the pharmacy’s dispensing robot.

The event ran from 10am-2pm and had a family-friendly theme which included face painting and the chance for younger visitors to turn detective and use a Geiger counter to pinpoint radioactive spider bites on a life-size Superman.

Debbie Fleming, chief executive said: “I was overwhelmed to see so many people wanting to go on the tours of our many departments and services, and delighted to see so many family members coming in with staff throughout the day to support their colleagues.

“So many members of the public attended, and I’m so very proud of all those staff who provided stalls/presentations showcasing their work.

“It really was a wonderful and celebratory occasion.”

During the day, the Hospital Radio Bedside kept visitors up to date of the latest news at the main entrance which was opened by Sandra and Harry Redknapp.

The open day rounded up a week of celebrations to mark 50 years since the official opening of the new Poole Hospital by Her Majesty the Queen in 1969.

This included the hospital’s awards evening, the annual members meeting and a ‘thank you’ event for staff and the opening of the new main entrance.
