Bookshops, libraries, schools, literary festivals and publishers will be hosting events and making noise about some of the most sordid, subversive, sensational and taboo-busting books around.

Banned Books Week UK is a nationwide campaign for readers of all ages to celebrate the freedom to read. Between 22nd – 28th September 2019,

Banned Books week was launched in 1982 in response to a dramatic rise in the amount of books being challenged across american libraries, schools and bookshops.

Since then, according to the American Library Association more than 11,000 books have been challenged, with that number continuing to grow.

Banned Books week UK mirrors the US incentive and highlights the importance of being able to read, write and publish freely.

libraries, book shops, schools and reading groups are encouraged to hold events celebrating the freedom to read and to challenge voices and ideas being silenced.
