Are you looking for a hobby with a difference? Why not try bell ringing at St Peter’s Church in Bournemouth!
We went along to one of their Thursday evening practice sessions to find out more, and have a go at ringing the bells. Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be climbing a lot of stairs. Oh, and if you’re afraid of heights, this may not be the best activity for you either!
Once we got to the top of the bell tower, we were introduced to the other ringers, and told a bit about the history of the tower.
We watched, mesmerised, as practice began and the group worked in perfect harmony to sound the bells that would ring out across Bournemouth town centre. When it was our turn to have a go, we realised that it’s nowhere near as easy as they make it look. It’s surprisingly tricky to get the timing right and, within seconds, I’d committed the faux-pas of getting the bell stuck in its upside down resting position.
It’s certainly an interesting experience, and I could see how it might be a nice, anxiety-busting hobby to take up.
