LEISURE: Church gets involved in Christmas merry-making festival in Poole

St Peter’s Church in Poole will host a festive celebration on Saturday (20 Dec) in partnership with Pier Journal with an artisan market, Santa’s Grotto, live music, carols and beer.

The collaborative event is the latest partnership for the Church which has expanded its remit into live music and community events, and will raise money for local good causes with £1 of every ticket donated to support pastoral care and connection in Ashley Cross.

Inside the church from 10am you’ll find 30+ stalls selling food, drink, jewellery, ceramics, art and more. For children, there will be a chance to meet Father Christmas, try out some crafts and listen to some stories told by local authors and writers.

Local musicians including Ribble, Angie RamJam and Roxanne Phillips will provide live entertainment. The Confessional bar will be serving mulled wine, beer, cider and non alcoholic drinks too, and there will be stalls serving hot food and drink outside.

The market ends at 5pm with the annual Carols and Beer event outside the church. The merriment will continue into the evening with a self-guided festive pub trail around the Bermuda Triangle, Bricklayer’s Arms and Butcher’s Dog – which have live music, food and drink.

Reverend Mike Trotman said: “We’re really pleased to be teaming up with Pier Journal to create an all-day event around our popular annual Carols & Beer gathering. The range of stalls we’ve got to help people with that last minute Christmas shopping is incredible and we’re looking forward to welcoming hundreds of local families through the doors for this special celebration.”

Sammy Murphy, Co-Director of Pier Journal, added: “As soon as we interviewed Reverend Mike about the growing role of St Peter’s Church in the community, we knew we had to collaborate on an event and Winter at the Cross was born. At Pier, we celebrates the work of local makers, producers, artists, writers and musicians on the pages of our free community journal and it’s amazing to be able to do this in person with events like this too.”

The days events include:

  • An artisan market, Santa’s grotto, live music, carols and beers and more

  • Over 30 stalls with local makers and producers from across Dorset including: Black Ven Rum, Dorset Shortbread, Charlotte Miller Ceramics, Becky Walker Jewellery, Lauren Marina and Old Green

  • Live music from Kayleigh Powell, Shannon White, Tempest Rose, Roxanne Phillips, Angie RamJam and Ribble
