Two people have been arrested following a report of a late night robbery where a man was threatened with an axe as he tried to help a distressed woman.

The man in his 40s was driving down Moorside Road at around 2:20am on Monday 3 January when he spotted a woman in the road who was signalling that she needed his help, he stopped to speak with her and she told him that there was someone chasing her. She got into the passenger side of the car and the man continued driving down the road with the woman.

After travelling a short distance, the woman asked him to stop the car which then led to the passenger door suddenly being pulled open and a man reportedly wielding an axe threatened the man while demanding that he hand over his wallet and phone.

Before the situation could get worse, the driver accelerated away down the road while the woman was still in the car. Once they had made it a small way, the woman and the driver had a small scuffle before she eventually got out and the driver noticed his house keys had gone missing.

Eventually, following enquiries from police, a 36-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and a 34-year-old woman, also from Cornwall was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. Both have currently been released on police bail while the investigation continues and further enquiries are made.
