Royal Bournemouth Hospital has begun construction on a new building that will hold a critical care unit, an emergency department, a children’s unit and a maternity unit.

The new building is set to establish Royal Bournemouth Hospital as a major emergency healthcare facility in Dorset, dubbed as the Beach Building (Births, Emergency care, And, Critical care and child Health) it will be over six storeys and will stand at 26,000 square meters.

A new building in the hospital will hopefully improve the struggles with overcrowding and the waiting list times that have been causing concern for those trying to make appointments and staff who don’t have the facilities to treat more patients that need serious attention.

University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) chief strategy and transformation officer Richard Renaut attended the attended the ground breaking ceremony and said: “This is a ground-breaking day in many ways as we celebrate what is a significant milestone for our local NHS and the patients we serve”.

The new Beach Building is part of a £250m transformation plan of UHD hospitals, including Poole Hospital and Christchurch Hospital, and is scheduled to be completed in the Autumn of 2024.
