LOCAL NEWS: Twin Sails bridge re-opens after 4 months of construction works

The Twin Sails bridge has been reopened into full operation after construction workers successfully replaced one of the main bearing pivot-pins.

Engineers assessed a noise heard coming from the lift ram on the bridge on August 3 this year and it was immediately shut down to avoid further damage to the bridge.

The bridge was required to be kept in the down position during its repair and despite BCP Council claiming the bridge would be re-opened in Autumn, after several public complaints and many delays, the council announced it is now usable again to road users, cyclists and pedestrians.

Work will continue to fully rectify the issues with the bridge following the outcome of an independent review performed by specialists who worked alongside BCP Council.

Councillor Andy Hadley, Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure at BCP Council, said: “I would like to thank our residents for putting up with the disruption, but especially thank all those who have been working incredibly hard over the past few weeks through high winds, rain and low temperatures to bring the bridge back into operation.”

Our next priority is to ensure we have a longer-term solution to the issues affecting Twin Sails and we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.’’

Twin Sails Bridge will run on the currently advertised lifting schedule until further notice.
