Donations which amounted to over £28,000 have enhanced care at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital Eye Unit.
Staff at the Bournemouth Eye Unit have received £28,428.98 in donations from local charity Friends of the Bournemouth Eye Unit to pay for new items and training at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
The charity raise funds to support the unit by purchasing equipment and funding improvements for the Eye Unit team.
The money was raised from investments, fundraising and donations, including £14,000 from Barton-on-Sea Golf Club who chose the Friends of the Eye Unit as their ‘Charity of the year’.
This support has enabled the purchase of portable slit lamps, artisan lens forceps and other equipment that will help expand the hospital’s corneal service and improve patients’ experience.
Mr Rashid, Consultant Specialist in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery said: “We are very appreciative for the support and assistance provided by the Friends of the Eye unit this equipment has allowed patients to receive the latest treatments closer to home”
Donations from the charity were given to the Royal National Institute for the Blind to enable the services of an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer (ECLO) to continue.
The funding also allowed for the purchase of air puff tonometers which enable the Eye Unit to run ‘virtual clinics’, resulting in a reduction of patient waiting times.
