The Marine Conservation Society are making a return this September with their annual Great British Beach Clean, and you can join in!

Between the 20th and 23rd of September, the Great British Beach Clean will invite thousands of people to help clean up hundreds of beaches nationwide, including Durley Chine, Hengistbury Head and Holes Bay North.

Running the events nationwide, volunteers with the Marine Conservation Society collected 8,550 kilograms of beach litter in 2018 and found an average of 600 items of litter per 100 meters of beach cleaned.

Helping to tackle ocean pollution

The Great British Beach Clean leads the way in tackling ocean pollution, helping to introduce some of the most significant impacts on our beaches ever, including the plastic bag charge and banning personal care product micro-plastics.

Unfortunately, in the last 25 years levels of litter on UK beaches have doubled in the past 20 years, according to the Marine Conservation Society.

So far, they’ve picked up 360 tonnes of litter at their Great British Beach Cleans over the last 25 years. That’s 6 million pieces of litter!

By taking part in one of their local beach cleans, you will be preventing more and more litter from polluting our oceans, as well as contributing to a national and global report on litter levels.
