As the dust has settled over the weekend of stress that A Level results chaotically threw about, and 18-year-old’s across the country nurse their weekend hangovers from celebrating, their successes have been noted and congratulated as some schools and colleges in the local area have record results to show off.

Nationally, the proportion of students achieving the top grades at A-level had actually fallen to its lowest level for more than a decade where this year some 25.5% got an A grade or higher – the lowest level since 2007 when it was 25.3%.

Girls narrowly reclaimed the lead from boys, with 25.5% achieving A* and A grades compared with 25.4% of boys.

More of a success story was apparent, however, with pass rates at Bournemouth Collegiate School this Results day, as they achieved their second highest ever set of A-Level results with more than 90% of pupils at the school gaining a place at their chosen university; described as a remarkable achievement for the outgoing Year 13 students.

Headmaster Mr Russell Slatford said: “I could not be prouder of this year group, they have contributed a great deal to the life of the school and their achievements will be hard to surpass in coming years.

“Whilst it is excellent to see many students heading off to some of the best universities in the country I am also immensely proud of those who will continue to study at music and arts institutions. It is perhaps the contribution this year group have made to the wider life of the school through sport, music, drama and extensive work in the community that have best prepared them for their futures.

“They will be missed and we wish them well.”

Students at Bournemouth & Poole College mark A Level results success as well, after achieving an overall pass rate of 97.14 per cent.

Young people and adults studying a wide range of courses at the College including biology, business, geography, law, mathematics, media, politics, psychology, and sociology visited the main hall of the Lansdowne site from 8.30am last Thursday to find out their results.

Judith Grandjean, Learning Manager of Sixth Form at Bournemouth & Poole College, said: “We are thrilled with the success and hard work put in by all our students who are looking to gain the best head start for their future career aspirations. Our pass rate is on the same level as the national average, which is a testament to the perseverance of the students and the fantastic support they receive from our staff.”

Scores of students will now be heading to their chosen universities, or other further education as well as apprenticeships or heading into the world of work.

Ray Garcia, 18, who achieved an A in biology, C in chemistry and B in maths at A Level, said: “I feel very happy about my results. I’ve been offered an unconditional offer to study biomedical sciences at the University of Southampton, and my aspiration is to go into biomedical research.”

Pia Rodway, 19, who achieved an A in psychology and English literature, and a B in sociology, said: “I am really pleased as I put in a lot of hard work. I’m now going to Sussex University to study psychology with criminology.”
