HEALTH: Spot the signs this Diabetes Week

0

With Diabetes Week taking place between 10-16 June, are you able to spot the signs of Type 1 Diabetes?

Around 2,000 children in the UK develop Type 1 diabetes every year, this is caused by their bodies being unable to produce insulin, and as a result they cannot regulate blood sugar.

If the body doesn’t produce any insulin then it starts to break to break down proteins and fats, toxic by-products then build up in the blood stream; this can potentially lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), this can be life threatening.

So, with this in mind, what are the symptoms that you should look out for?

It’s as easy as the four Ts:

  • Toilet – is there an excessive need to go to the toilet?
  • Thirsty – is there exceptional thirst?
  • Tired – are they sleepy and lethargic?
  • Thinner – is there weight loss?
