Busting some myths about adoption

Aspire Adoption is a partnership between three local authorities – Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole – that makes up one the of the UK’s first regional adoption agencies.

In what was a successful first year, the agency helped 70 children find new families. It hopes to approve 60 new adopters in its second year and hopes to find new families for siblings and older children.

Adoption might seem like a daunting or overwhelming process, but Aspire wants to assure people that there is plenty of support along the way, along with social groups for adoptive families. The host regular information evenings (details of which can be found on their social media channels) for anyone considering adoption as their path to growing their family. 

Some important things to know about adoption

  • There is no age limit – people into their 50s may be eligible to adopt
  • There are no eligibility restrictions based on cultural or religious background, sexuality or disability
  • Single parents can also adopt
